I enjoy getting lost in the concentration of working on an image. You know you were lost for a while when you look out the window and realise that the day has passed by without you noticing.

I've tried doing more pencil work recently, as opposed to Photoshop paintings. Photoshop paintings are easier for me; it's an amazing tool and it has an undo button and lots of other things that make creating images easier than with natural media - like pencils and brushes.

The pictures I've made in Photoshop are far more realistic than my pencil drawings, and realism is what I'm aiming for at the moment, but I feel I achieve more with the more difficult pencil stuff.  However, even though I think of my Photoshop 'paintings' as being less respectable, I still enjoy working on them as much as the natural media ones.  I still have to concentrate just as hard on looking at the source images, and time flies by just the same.  The difference is in the feeling of achievement when the picture is finished.

I've seen a marked improvement in my work this year, although I haven't managed to spend much time drawing, I actually quite like one or two of the things I've made. ALTHOUGH - a quick wander around this website is all it takes to find some truly stunning artists, creating images that I just can't begin to understand how they were created, or how they manage to persuade their eyes so effectively to see the world as it really is and put it on paper.

It makes you wonder how much you can improve by learning, training, practising. Are we limited by some genetic factor or can anyone, with the inclination and enough time to learn and practise paint like a master?

Whatever the answer, even though it would be great to be the best artist the world has ever seen, I still enjoy getting lost in a picture, however it turns out.

I'm going to try to concentrate a bit more on 'real' drawing for a while (instead of photoshop / gridding).  Hopefully with a bit of practice I'll see some improvement :)
